El motivo de este comunicado es anunciar mi retiro de la selección uruguaya de fútbol fue una decisión difícil pero creo que es el momento indicado lo hablé con mi familia y antes de comunicárselo a ustedes la semana pasada llamé a el maestro sus colaboradores y mis compañeros es momento de dar lugar a nuevas generaciones elegí este momento en particular por ser simbólico ya que comienza una nueva etapa previa a la copa américa y al mundial al igual que aquel en el 2006 cuando con varios compañeros empezamos un proceso similar para ellos llega un camino lleno de exigencias y desafíos pero también de satisfacciones y de la sensación del deber cumplido hoy dejo de formar parte de la selección uruguaya de fútbol como jugador pero voy a seguir siendo un hincha más como somos todos los uruguayos cuando era niño iba al estadio con mi papá y soñaba con jugar al fútbol volvía a casa y me iba a la calle donde repetía una y otra vez cada jugada o gol que había visto lo soñaba y lo imaginaba pero nunca imaginé lo que iba a pasarme tuve la oportunidad de jugar 3 mundiales y 3 copas américas el mundial de sudáfrica es uno de los mejores recuerdos que tengo del fútbol el 4 puesto logrado por la selección haber compartido el premio de goleador haber sido elegido con el gol que hice contra alemania como el mejor gol del mundial y como broche de oro haber sido elegido mejor jugador del mundo pero aún más importante es lo que le transmitimos al pueblo uruguayo uruguay volvía a ocupar el lugar que había alcanzado muchos años atrás no solo logramos eso en lo profesional sino también en lo humano el cuidado por las formas los valores algo que no es fácil de encontrar hoy en día y que este grupo lo comenzó a transmitir de ahí nace esa unión entre esta selección y el pueblo uruguayo todos se sentían identificados y orgullosos de ser uruguayos nosotros los jugadores y ustedes los hinchas por esto el premio de haber sido parte del equipo que logró marcar un antes y un después es el más importante de todos como siempre digo uno no lidera solo con palabras sino con el ejemplo eso siempre fue y será mi pilar estoy seguro que lo he trasmitido y lo voy a seguir haciendo uno de los logros más preciados para mí y mi familia es haber ganado la copa américa 2011 comparto ese sentimiento con mi abuelo nino corazo y con mi padre que también la ganaron cuatro títulos continentales y tres generaciones forlán corazo algo que nunca se va a borrar de nuestra historia familiar y de la historia del fútbol mundial son muchos los recuerdos que me ha dejado la selección por ejemplo pasar el récord de partidos de rodolfo rodríguez o romper el récord de scarone entre otros también tuve el privilegio de compartir equipo y concentraciones con grandes jugadores de fútbol pero más importante con grandes personas en este momento se me vienen a la mente muchas personas los cuerpos técnicos desde la sub 20 hasta la mayor el cuerpo médico de alberto pan barbosita el gran minguta víctor los sebas walter ferreira alfredo carlitos machado neira miguel zuluaga claudio pagani maría aldo también dirigentes y periodistas son muchos años y me llevo muchos recuerdos soy un privilegiado por haber formado parte de este grupo que le ha dado tanto a uruguay y a todos ellos quiero dejarles un especial agradecimiento a todos los uruguayos a todo el pueblo en general gracias por todo el cariño que me dieron durante todos estos años y que me siguen dando cada vez que estoy en uruguay o cada vez que me encuentro con algún uruguayo por el mundo esto no es una despedida sino un hasta luego muchas gracias diego forlán.
